| I Can't Promise You'll
Live Forever “How old are
you?”
Amy and I had gotten
acquainted during the last year at the gas-and-food store
where she worked near my office. Her smile told me she was
nervous about asking, but not whether her reason was personal
or just curiosity. Since it is always interesting to see if
the truth is acceptable to people, I told her, “I’m 57.” She
was shocked. Whatever her original purpose, her disbelief took
over. “You certainly don’t look like 57. I was guessing 42.”
Pleased by her reaction, I told her, “This is what 57 is
supposed to look like.” She looked at me with a new
appreciation.
If you are like me, it is
flattering to have someone think you are younger than your
chronological age. Having youth usually means you have the
strength to do all you intend to do with your life, the appeal
to attract to you the attention you want, and the energy to
enjoy the pleasures life offers. At any age, what we all want
is to live long and well and healthy. So, because of her
appreciation, I told Amy the story I’ll share here with you.
| You see, I have learned and
experienced that it is possible
for your internal biological age to be less than your
chronological age. |
This is not religion, Eastern
mysticism or self-hypnosis. This is the science of biology in
the 21st century.
I found some researchers who
discovered that youthful strength and health depend on the
inner body chemistry that signals the brain what instructions
to send to your nerves, organs and glands. Your brain can
instruct your body to function, at the cellular level, either
in the youthful, growth phase of life or in the gradual,
decades-long shutdown process known as aging.
What I discovered is that you
have a choice between these two and I want to tell you about
it.
What arrived at my home in
the mail was one of those envelopes I usually throw away
without opening it.
There was no return address
and my address was handwritten. Those usually have a chain
letter inside. I opened it, anyway. It was a typed page, no
pictures or dramatic graphics. I don’t remember any more just
what it said. There was a headline about a scientist being
younger now than he was four years earlier and that made me
read it.
The man who sent it had
included his phone number. So, I phoned him several times to
ask questions. He pointed me to a website and I got some
audiotapes that told a very encouraging story.
| The gist of that story was
that after some astounding research by some very
experienced nutritional scientists,
products had been developed that
reversed the aging process. |
The term “anti-aging” was not
overused then like it is now and I was not sure what was meant
by the aging process or how one could reverse it. But, I
wanted that… if it was real.
Now, I’m the kind of man who
has no health problems. So, when I take a new energizing
product, I don’t feel anything much different. But, I knew
that, if this anti-aging product line were genuine, I’d want
to talk about it. So, when I learned that there was a
before-and-after test that would give me actual numbers,
measuring any change my body experienced, I decided I had to
take it.
Just before my 55th birthday,
I sent off a urine sample to an independent lab that did this
anabolic/catabolic index. I apologize for the technical term.
But, if there were already a common name for this, it would
not be a new development coming from recent scientific work.
| Two weeks later, I got back
a report from that lab showing that I was aging at the
rate of a 70-year-old man.
I was shocked! |
Keep in mind I had just
turned 55. I phoned the laboratory and got one of the
technicians on the line. I said, “This doesn’t make any sense.
I do farm work every day, which gives me more than the 30
minutes of exercise recommended for an adult. That compels me
to drink the 2 quarts of water an adult is supposed to drink.
I live out here in Mennonite country. So, I get fresh fruits
and vegetables almost year round.” I told him what vitamin and
mineral supplements I’d been taking for years.
He did not dismiss anything I
said. He listened, then, quietly said, “The other major factor
that will cause a person to age faster is stress.” Stress
seems like one of those words used to cover conditions a
health professional cannot explain. But, I knew clearly that
the heart-breaking family situation I was in was giving me
more stress than I’d experienced at any other time in my life.
I began taking the anti-aging
products that came from the research I’d thoroughly read about
by this time. I did it for four months and then sent off
another urine sample to the independent lab for analysis.
| I got back a report showing
me aging at the rate of a 42-year-old man.
This, friends, was a totally
different kind of shock! |
I can still feel the rush of
joy I felt when I opened the envelope and read the report.

How did
this come to be? Who are the scientific researchers who made
these discoveries?
In 1989, Dr. Stephen
Cherniske published a book titled, The DHEA Breakthrough. DHEA
is the mother hormone that your body uses to make all the
other hormones that regulate many of your body’s life
processes. Its discovery has enabled people under doctor’s
care to overcome many of the adverse effects of aging.
The enthusiasm that greeted
this discovery led too many people to overuse DHEA. Dr.
Cherniske wrote the book to proclaim the wonderful effects
DHEA can have on the human body and to give the correct
guidance that would help people to not over-buy and overuse
it. His writing was based on solid research on the use and
results of DHEA.
Because this book was a
bestseller for months, it came to the attention of a man who
is the head of one of the richest families on Earth. His name
is B. William Lee from Korea. The Lee family owns 146,000
acres of Siberian rain forest, 40% of the world’s Aloe Vera
plantations, and several companies involved in both
pharmaceutical and natural products research and product
development. Mr. Lee arranged a visit with Dr. Cherniske.
Based on hints in a number of audio and videotapes, this is my
imaginative reconstruction of that conversation.
Mr. Lee: “Dr. Cherniske, I
was impressed by your book. It suggests that you have
expertise in an area that is a keen interest of my family. We
want to discover if it is possible to use natural products to
positively affect the human aging process. We are impatient
with the criticism of plant-based nutritional supplements that
they have no scientific studies to support the health claims
that many cultures have experienced for centuries. It is time
to provide that science.”
Dr. Cherniske: “Thank you for
your confidence in me, based on what is in my book. Mr. Lee,
when I was at university listening to a professor talk about
what I regard as the magnificent health system of the human
body, I was amazed when he said that
the human body replaces 300 billion cells each and every
day. To me this meant the opportunity to provide the
materials those new cells need to restore youthful functioning
throughout the body.
If this were true, you could
make the body younger, in some sense. The professor regarded
this as youthful innocence, which he tried to squash in one
reply, saying that gradually the cells become poorer copies of
the ones before them, that the debilitating effects of aging
are unavoidable. In my mind, I disagreed and I yearn for the
chance to do the research that will prove I’m right. In other
words, if the answer is in natural products, I’m personally
motivated to do the science you want done.”
Mr. Lee: “Excellent! Our
goals match. And, if you can discover the key to the aging
process and we can develop natural products that can reverse
aging, you will achieve all that we could hope for. Is it
possible for you to put together a team of scientists who have
already done research on one part or another of the aging
process, each of whom has already published in respected
journals?”
Dr. Cherniske: “I don’t think
that will be a problem. Once they understand what we are
aiming to accomplish, I believe their love of a big goal will
bring them to us.”
| Mr. Lee: “Then, I’ll commit
to your work a 16,000 square foot research facility and
a budget of two million dollars for you to use for this
goal.” |
And, so, they began.
While the team Dr. Cherniske
put together did their own research, they also used a service
that searched all the professional, peer-review publications
that had anything to do with this anti-aging research in order
to find out about anyone else’s work that would speed them on
their way to their goal.
Dr. Cherniske gives one
example in the study done by the team of Dr. James Joseph of
Tufts University. Theirs was a test of a diet of blueberries
on rats. Known for anti-oxidant properties, they wanted to
know if blueberries could affect the performance of rats in
figuring out how to get to food in mazes. They took a
population of rats that had been able to successfully and
swiftly run mazes to find food, but had declined in that
ability. They “harvested” a portion of that population and
dissected their brains and found a chemical condition on their
brains associated with aging and memory loss. They put the
remainder of the rat population on a steady diet of
blueberries.
After a time, those
rats could once again successfully run mazes to find food.
The research team “harvested” another portion of that
population and dissected their brains and found that the
chemical condition that adversely affects memory was absent in
those rats.
| This was amazing, because it
clearly demonstrated that the chemical degradation of
the brain, associated with aging,
had been
reversed. |
In a phone conversation with
Dr. Joseph, Dr. Cherniske congratulated him and offered to
help with the next step. “What next step?” Dr. Joseph asked.
“Well,” Dr. Cherniske said, “blueberries are all natural. So,
there shouldn’t be any fear of adverse side effects. Aren’t
you going to test this on humans next?”
Dr. Joseph replied, “First,
we wouldn’t get funding from any company, because they would
not have a monopoly guaranteeing a return on their investment,
since blueberries cannot be patented. Second, it would require
the persons in the test to eat a cup of blueberries every day,
possibly for years. No one would want to and I don’t know how
we’d monitor them.” Dr. Cherniske said, “We have the means
here to concentrate the blueberries into any form you want:
drinks or powder in capsules. We can make that easier for
you.” Dr. Joseph retorted, “Well, then, you do it.” As he hung
up, Dr. Cherniske said to himself, “Ok. We will.” Today,
that product exists, combining blueberries, cranberries,
cherries, grape, Gingko Biloba, alpha lipoic acid and aloe
concentrate.
This is just one example of
many discoveries that led to the identification of the actual
mechanism of aging. For a non-technical way of picturing it,
Dr. Cherniske describes the brain as asking the muscles,
nervous system, organs and glands of the body how they are
functioning. In the anabolic… the youthful growth phase
of life… the report is good and the brain continues to send
instructions to the body to keep on manufacturing the hormones
and cell replacements that keep the body strong, active, able
to repair cell damage and feeling good.
As time goes on and people
become physically less active and as the effects of poor diet
add up, the brain’s survey of the body’s systems receives
reports of stress and strain, of weakness and failing
function. So, the brain gives the body instructions to
gradually shutdown, age and die… the catabolic phase of
life.
There is, of course, a
complex biochemical description of all this. But, the best
part of this story is that this intensive research has
resulted in drinks and pills, all composed of natural plant
ingredients that affect the condition of the body’s organs,
glands, tissues, muscles and nerves in such a way that
the brain gets reports from the body
of a healthy, vibrant condition that causes the brain to flip
the switch back the other way.
It begins again sending
instructions to rebuild, repair and replace aged cells with
healthier cells.
| These products put the
choice of youthful function in your hands. |
We have come to expect
amazing discoveries from scientific research. So, we may not
clearly understand where this discovery puts us.
Ever since Carl Rehnborg
opened his nutritional labs in the late 1920s, people have had
nutritional supplements, in the form of pills, available to
them. Education on the need for supplemental vitamins,
minerals and other plant factors was slow to grow through the
20th century.
But, grow it did.
Then, in the 1980s, health
researchers said they had discovered the wall. The very air we
must breathe to live is also the cause of our deaths. Our
cells oxidize, just like a cut apple turns brown or a metal
bar rusts, because their chemicals bond with loose oxygen
atoms, known as free radicals. As our cells oxidize, they
cannot perform their function within body tissues.
The failed function of body
tissues disables the organs throughout the body, creating the
painful disability of aging and, finally, death. We have
discovered, they said, that the process of death is “wired”
into our cells. So, there is a limit to which we can extend
human life. That limit is not much beyond the life expectancy
of 77 years.
Depressing.
But, then, in the middle
1990s, nutritional scientists announced the existence in many
plants of ingredients that act as anti-oxidants. These
ingredients capture the free radicals by bonding with them
before they can bond with your body’s cells. So, as deadened
cells are replaced, the new ones can be protected from free
radicals.
It turns out that free
radicals are all around us in the many pollutants that are in
our air and water. It also turns out that anti-oxidants are
all around us in a vast variety of fresh fruits and
vegetables.
Think about this.
At one moment, scientific
researchers identify a danger to our lives that is unavoidable
and uncorrectable. In the next moment, other scientific
researchers discover that wall is an illusion, not a real
barrier. The problems and the answers are both in nature.
So, it is not irrational to
believe that the traditional concept of aging can also prove
to not be a final barrier to the resources of nature and the
discoveries of scientific research. Dr. Cherniske’s verdict on
the misuse of the term “anti-aging” to refer to skin creams or
standard nutritional supplements or growth hormones is this:
If it is not based on the discovery of what the actual
metabolic process of aging is and cannot demonstrate how it
reverses that mechanism, it is not anti-aging.
If it does not reverse the
cause of aging, but only treats effects of aging, it is not
anti-aging.
| So, what is available to you
is not just nutritional supplementation. It is not just
anti-oxidation. This is the
formula that reaches into the mechanism of the body’s
aging process and signals the brain to reverse that
process. |
And, now, Dr. Cherniske’s
team is taking advantage of the successful completion of the
mapping of the human genome in order to test the effect of new
products on both DNA and RNA, the puzzle assemblers of the
human gene, which is the building block of all the cells in
your body. This is
real life science.
If you
have read this far, you want to know what is in it for you.
I cannot promise that you
will live forever. Government regulation forbids me from
talking about a cure of any condition you may have. These
discoveries and products will not turn an 80-year-old man into
a 16-year-old boy. But, I can truthfully tell you that
there is a test than can measure the youthful change in your
own body’s metabolism, the governing factor in your body’s
healthy function. You’ll be able to talk about your
results from taking these products. You stand a chance to live
longer, with more energy and vitality, a chance that did not
exist for earlier generations.
Now, I have a question to ask
you:
| If there are people whom you
really care about, and if you really knew of a formula
of natural health products that would lengthen the lives
and improve the enjoyment of these people’s lives,
wouldn’t you feel guilty if you
kept the secret to yourself and didn’t tell them about
it? |
Now that I
have told you my story, the choice to take action is yours.
